6 great tips to protect your jewelry during the summer

Summer is fun. Summer is good for morale. We dress lightly, we love going out and enjoying the sun and the good weather which is over all too quickly in Quebec. But what about the jewelry that you wear all the time? What happens to it if it doesn’t receive proper care? What should we do to avoid losing them, to preserve them and to keep them beautiful and pristine for as long as possible?

TIP 1 : REMOVE IT WHEN SWIMMING

TIP 1 : REMOVE IT WHEN SWIMMING

Choose stainless steel jewelry when you go swimming or go camping. If you wear jewelry that isn’t too precious, the risk of you losing the piece it reduced. It also prevents tarnishing, which is often more expensive to fix. If you lose a piece in a river, a lake or a swimming pool you will not be as bothered as you would  if it were a lost diamond. Here’s a sad anecdote from one of our clients: she was on vacation and she wanted to fish for the first time. When she launched her line, she heard something drop in the water. It wasn’t the hook that made the noise, but the 1-karat diamond from her engagement ring. Devastating, right?   Why is it easier to lose your jewelry in the water? The cooler temperature of natural water sources causes fingers to shrink, which are often swollen from body heat. The ring therefore slides more easily. Fingers also become more slippery when applying sunscreen. Be careful at all times!
TIP 2 : WEAR ADJUSTABLE JEWELRY

TIP 2 : WEAR ADJUSTABLE JEWELRY

Choose jewelry that you can adjust as needed. This avoids losses caused by the narrowing of your fingers. You can take your jewelry off and put it on easily. Don’t forget to be the lookout for temperature changes that can increase the risk of the jewelry slipping off. We have very fashionable jewelry in stock for the summer from our wide range of Sophistikate bracelets and SteelX sliding bracelets. Pick one of your favourites here.

Tip 3 Clean your jewelry regularly

With summer comes action, sun exposure and mosquitoes. This is where sunscreen and mosquito repellents come in. These products accumulate on the jewelry, which attracts and keeps dust or sand particles on it. Your jewelry gets dirty faster and we don’t want that.  Remember that salt water, chlorine and spa products do not mix well with gold and silver jewelry. The risk of tarnishing these materials increases with the use you make of them. If possible, don’t take that chance. If need be, we have cleaning products for gold and silver and we have polishing cloths in store.
TIP 4 : PLAY SPORTS WITHOUT JEWELRY, IF POSSIBLE

Sweat is also the enemy of your jewelry, especially if you have a more acidic skin. Your skin could tarnish your ring, pendant or earrings. There is also a risk of breaking the chain of a pendant which increases in the heat of the moment.

Tip 5: Choose rings that fit more than one finger during the summer

If a ring fits your index finger perfectly, but is a little too big for your middle finger, it could fit your middle finger perfectly depending on the temperature. When it’s hot, fingers can swell and a ring that is usually too large for a middle finger might suddenly fit. You can then wear your jewelry on a finger regardless of the temperature.
TIP 6 : ICE—OUR ALLY IN CASE OF SWELLING

TIP 6 : ICE—OUR ALLY IN CASE OF SWELLING

When a ring gets stuck on a swollen finger, you can use ice cubes to make it easier to remove. Even after a bee sting, don’t wait, put on ice and remove it as soon as possible. A client has already had her wedding ring cut to prevent her finger from being cut instead.    We hope that you will spend the most pleasant of summers with jewelry that is suited to your activities and your lifestyle.    These were our best tips for the Summer and we wanted to share them with you.
